Now that I'm a paid member and working through a yukata project, I have a question about dakihaba. I understand from your website that dakihaba (抱巾) is calculated as the same width as maehaba (前幅), or optionally maehaba minus 1 cm. Is that also true for women who have a larger bust size with larger (bra) cup sizes? My chest is about 104 cm, and I wear a C-cup bra, and some friends of mine even wear E- or F-cup bras. This is a frequent sizing issue for women in Western Europe, and knowing cup size is critical for doing western sewing projects successfully. How should I calculate dakihaba in this case - should more length be added into the mitake to ensure that a fuller bust can be covered? And (how) does that affect the dakihaba measurement?

Accepted Answer

If you have a larger bust size with larger (bra) cup sizes, it’s best to make the Dakihaba larger as well. If you increase the Dakihaba, the Maehaba will also increase accordingly. I’ve included the calculation method below for your reference.

Minimum required The Dakihaba = (Chest size ÷ 4) + 2 cm

For Hip Size > Chest Size
Step 1. Determine the Maehaba and Ushirohaba based on the hip size
Step 2. Determine the Dakihaba

For Hip Size < Chest Size
Step 1. Calculate the Dakihaba based on the chest size
Step 2. Determine the Maehaba based on the Dakihaba
Step 3. Determine the Ushirohaba based on the Maehaba
